LED vs. Fluorescent Sign Lighting: Why It Is Time to Switch
Still have fluorescent tubes in your sign? Here is why LED retrofits save money, look better, and last longer — plus what the conversion costs.
If your business sign was installed before 2015, there's a good chance it's still running on fluorescent tubes. They work, but they're outdated technology — and they're costing you more money than you think. Here's why switching to LEDs is worth it.
Energy Savings
LEDs use 50-70% less electricity than fluorescent tubes for the same brightness. For a sign that runs 12 hours a day, that adds up fast. A typical cabinet sign with fluorescent lighting might cost $30-50/month in electricity. The same sign with LEDs costs $10-15/month. Over 5 years, that's $1,000-$2,000 in savings — often enough to pay for the retrofit itself.
Brightness and Appearance
Fluorescent tubes create uneven lighting — brighter near the tubes, dimmer in between. You've seen it: that patchy, inconsistent glow with visible bright and dark spots. LEDs distribute light more evenly across the entire sign face, giving you a clean, uniform look.
Fluorescent tubes also dim over time. After 2-3 years, they're noticeably dimmer than when they were new, even if they're still technically working. LEDs maintain their brightness for much longer.
Lifespan
Fluorescent tubes typically last 10,000-15,000 hours before they need replacing. That's about 2-3 years of typical sign usage. LEDs last 50,000-100,000 hours — roughly 10-20 years. That means fewer service calls, less maintenance, and less time with a half-lit sign making your business look neglected.
Maintenance
Fluorescent signs require periodic tube replacements, ballast replacements, and socket repairs. Each service call costs $150-$400+. LEDs are essentially maintenance-free for the first 7-10 years.
What Does an LED Retrofit Cost?
A typical LED retrofit for an existing cabinet or channel letter sign runs $500-$2,000 depending on the sign size and number of letters. The process is straightforward: we remove the old fluorescent tubes and ballasts, install LED modules or strips, and wire everything to a new driver. The sign face and structure stay the same.
Most businesses see a full return on investment within 2-3 years from energy savings and avoided maintenance costs alone.
When to Retrofit vs. Replace
If your sign structure is still in good condition — no rust, no cracked faces, no fading — a retrofit makes sense. You're keeping the existing sign and just upgrading the guts.
If the sign is also physically deteriorating — peeling paint, yellowed faces, rusted cabinet — it might be time for a full replacement rather than putting new lighting in an old sign.
We Do Both
We retrofit existing signs and build new ones. If you're not sure which option is right for your situation, we'll come take a look and give you an honest recommendation. No charge for the assessment.
